IEEE was founded in 1884 with Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison among its charter members. Today, IEEE serves over 400,000 members worldwide. Over 100,000 Student and Graduate Student members worldwide make up 25% of the membership of IEEE and are essential to its continued growth and vitality. Not only is IEEE the world’s largest technical and professional society, it also publishes a significant amount of the electrical engineering and computer-science literature in the world.
IEEE worldwide membership is geographically divided into ten Regions. These Regions are further divided into Sections that serve as the centers of activity for professional engineers at the local level. IEEE Student Branch of SMVITM (Code: STB10147) falls under Bangalore Section and Mangalore Sub Section in Region 10.
The IEEE Student Branch of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, provides a vibrant platform for students to enhance their technical knowledge, professional skills, leadership abilities and innovation. The Student Branch connects students with the global IEEE community and encourages participation in technical talks, workshops, hands-on training, competitions, project activities, peer-learning programmes, research and community outreach initiatives.
The IEEE Student Branch, SMVITM functions under IEEE Region 10 (Asia and Pacific), IEEE Bangalore Section and IEEE Mangalore Subsection, providing students opportunities to participate in professional and technical activities at the Subsection, Section, Regional and global levels.
SMVITM has established a strong IEEE ecosystem with specialized Societies, Councils and Affinity Groups, providing students opportunities to explore diverse areas of engineering and emerging technologies. These include the IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA), IEEE Sensors Council, IEEE Systems Council, IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society (TEMS), IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS), IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS), and IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group. The Student Branch also promotes IEEE SIGHT and humanitarian technology activities aimed at applying engineering solutions to community and societal needs.
Through these societies and chapters, students gain exposure to areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Communication Systems, IoT, VLSI and Semiconductor Design, Sensors, Robotics and Automation, Electric and Connected Vehicles, Intelligent Systems and Emerging Technologies. Student-led activities such as peer learning, technical workshops, mock interviews, ideathons, project mentoring and outreach programmes further strengthen practical learning and leadership skills.
IEEE SMVITM strives to nurture technically competent, innovative, socially responsible and professionally confident engineers by providing opportunities to learn, lead, innovate and serve. It serves as an important link between academic learning, industry interaction, professional development and the global engineering community.
IEEE’s core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
IEEE will be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions.
