SMVITM ECE Students Explore the Evolution of Semiconductor Technology and VLSI Trends

The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, SMVITM, in association with the IEEE Student Branch (STB10147), IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), and ISTE, organized an invited technical talk titled “From Vacuum Tubes to Advanced VLSI: Evolution of Semiconductor Technology and Industry Trends” as part of the Engineers’ Day celebrations.

The session was held at the Admin Block Seminar Hall and was delivered by Dr. P. Subbanna Bhat, Former Professor, ECE, NITK Surathkal, and Chief Mentor, Anvation Labs, Bengaluru. The session was attended by around 200 III and Final Year ECE students.

Dr. Bhat took students through the fascinating evolution of electronics—from vacuum tubes and ENIAC to transistors, integrated circuits, CMOS technology, microprocessors, and advanced VLSI systems. He also discussed key semiconductor milestones, technological advancements, and emerging industry trends, helping students connect their academic concepts with real-world technological developments.

The interactive session provided students with valuable industry-oriented insights into semiconductor innovation, VLSI evolution, and emerging opportunities, while also highlighting India’s scientific and technological heritage.

The programme helped students develop a broader understanding of how improvements in performance, reliability, efficiency, component density, and cost have driven the continuous evolution of semiconductor technology. Students appreciated the practical approach and historical perspective of the session and expressed interest in attending more such expert-led technical programmes in the future.
