The Counseling Cell of SMVITM in association with ISTE faculty chapter had organized a one-day training program on ‘Teacher Role as Counselors’ for faculties in the institute premises on 23/12/2015. In the first session, Dr. P.V. Bhandary, Director of A.V. Baliga Hospital gave a detailed insight on counseling needs for teenage students. He said, teachers must identify psychological problems of the students at the earliest and need to handle it with care. Teachers should assist them to gradually come out of it. Later, Mrs. Padma of A.V. Baliga Hospital engaged a session on ‘Examination Anxiety in students’. She elaborated the topic through certain case studies and quoted few incidents of lagging students who improved later in academics.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Deepak Mallya, Psychiatrist of A.V. Baliga Hospital gave a detailed insight on ‘Lay Counselling Techniques’. He said if teachers turn into counsellors then many of minor psychological issues hampering their academics could be solved at the earlier stages. At the outset it was a very fruitful training program which gave concrete ideas and information about ‘Lay Counselling for Teachers’. Principal Dr.Thirumaleshwara Bhat, Heads of various departments graced the inaugural function. Mrs. Shashikala, Coordinator of the Counseling Cell and team members helped in smooth conduction of the program.
