A two-day workshop on ‘Git and Github’ was organized on the 3rd and 4th of May 2021 through online mode, arranged exclusively for the members of CodeTroopers. Many people of the CodeTroopers club worked behind the scenes to ensure the success of this event. The designing team of CodeTroopers under the leadership of Mr. Mohammad Sahil (Des
igning Head), created the poster for the event. The marketing team of CodeTroopers under the leadership of Ms. Navya Shanbhag, (Marketing Head), took measures to promote the event on social media platforms to ensure maximum participation.
The workshop was held with an intention to introduce the basics of Git and Github, demonstrate various functionalities of the interface and provide information regarding the student developer pack to the participants. The workshop featured live demonstration and hands-on practice, so that the participants could experience the proceedings in real-time.
The sessions were delivered by Mr. Ashutosh Kumar, final year student from CSE who is also the IEEE Student Branch chair in SMVITM. Mr. Deepak Nayak, final year CSE student has also handled few other subject matters on day 2. Mr. Raunak Choudhary, President of the CodeTroopers club, gave the welcoming speech.
Day 1 of the workshop began with the topic of Version control systems and was followed by the introduction to Git and Github. Mr. Ashutosh demonstrated the usage of Github through his own final year project and highlighted the importance of several features of the platform. After this, the participants were encouraged to create Github profiles through their laptops and display their first repositories. The session was very interactive and the participants were responsive. The concepts of Github such as repository, readme.md, creating file, committing and uploading were then discussed.
Day 2 of the workshop focused on building the Github profile page of the participants. Tips and hacks on improving the format of the profile and making it professional were suggested by the speaker. Mr. Deepak Nayak demonstrated the use of Github desktop through the command prompt and explained the commands and methods to perform clone, push, pull, and commit operations into the repository. Coding through Visual Studio Code was also discussed. The final leg of the seminar was the introduction to the various Student Developer packs worth hundreds of dollars that can be accessed through student email-ids. Helpful instructions regarding the preparation of proposals to obtain these student packs were provided.
The workshop concluded with an exciting quiz that included the topics covered in the workshop. Mr. Sarvesh from 6th semester, CSE was the winner of the event, and received a voucher for GitHub course worth ₹500 from Udemy. Feedback forms were sent to the participants by the marketing team of CodeTroopers under the leadership of Ms. Navya Shanbhag, at the end of each day. The Media Head of CodeTroopers, Ms. Aninditha, took minutes of meeting and helped prepare the report. Finally, the President of the CodeTroopers club, Raunak Choudhary proposed the vote of thanks to all the participants and organizers and urged for similar cooperation in future events.
