The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering SMVITM organized a one-day workshop “Science and Spirituality” on 28 January 2019 in the college premises. Prof. Dr. P.R Mukund, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Rochester Institute of Technology, USA was the resource person. Faculty and Staff of various departments of SMVITM participated in this workshop and enhanced their knowledge on Science and Spirituality.
Prof. Dr. P.R. Mukund highlighted about two things referring to science and spirituality in life. He emphasized that, on one hand science relates to matter which explains how things work and on the other hand it leaves behind a desire to understand why things happen the way they do. It is always the energy behind the matter that makes things happen the way they do. Even though the material science can very well explain how certain things may happen, it is only the spiritual part that can tie the actual action to the cause. He explained the importance of spiritual strength over mental strength (manasika bala) and physical strength (dhaihika bala). He made an analogy of triguna in the Vedas – sattva (goodness), rajas (passion) and tamas (darkness) with the three basic elements of electric circuits – inductor (L), resistor (R) and capacitor (C) respectively. He also quoted an apt definition for success in life – “balance between shankha and chakra”, wherein chakra (wheel) symbolizes achieving maximum progress with minimal utilization of energy. Prof. Mukund created awareness on the fact that change in technology demands constant learning and motivated the staff to make the best utilization of known technology in exploring the concept of spirituality. Earlier Prof. Thirumaleshwara Bhat Principal welcomed Prof. Mukund, and Prof. Balachandra Achar, HOD of ECE department welcomed the college well-wisher Shri Shamasunder with flower bouquets. Ms. Laxmi Shetty, Sr. Assistant Professor introduced the resource person to the gathering. The program started with a prayer by Ms. Shreya Bhat and concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Prof. Achar. Ms. Sowmya Bhat compered the program.
