ISTE Student Chapter, in association with the department of Mechanical Engineering, arranged industrial visits on 24/09/2016, 5th Semester students of Mechanical Engineering from Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal visited 3 industries in Mangalore.
The students were split into two groups. One group was led by (Dr) Ganesh R Kalagi, Asst Prof, mech Engg, assisted by Mr Nithin Kumar Jain and the other was led by Mr Ananth Mohan Mallya, Asst Prof, Mech Engg, assisted by Mr Nagaraj Kalathoor.
The industries visited were Gurucharan Industries located at Baikampady Industrial Area, Mangalore, Lamina Suspension Products Ltd in the same industrial area and Mandovi Motors at Balmatta, Mangalore.
Gurucharan Industries are manufacturers and exporters of Plastic Processing Machinery and spare parts. The students were given a close look at some of the important operations that go into the fabrication of massive and complex machine units. Once the manufacture of machine spare parts was demonstrated, the latter part of the visit was the privilege of actually seeing plastic being processed from polymer pellets by the “extrusion blown film” process.
Lamina Suspension Products Ltd is a renowned manufacturer of leaf springs, automobile leaf springs, grey iron castings, SG iron castings and suspension spares & parts. The students were initially taken to the mechanical testing lab where they were shown the various samples that are tested as well as the testing methods followed. Later they were taken to the actual production area where they witnessed the working of gas furnaces, mechanical and hydraulic punches, rolling, curling and flattening machines etc. that are inevitably a part of most metal forming processes. The last parts of the visit were the assembly and painting areas.
The final industry was Mandovi Motors, which is a Maruti Suzuki sales and service center. The students were given a brief talk about the history of Maruti Suzuki India Ltd and the various products available along the years to the present.
Prof. Dr. Sudarshan Rao, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, supported and guided the students and faculty.
