Students of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) have developed MITRA (Multilingual Intelligent Translator for Recognition and Assistance), an AI-powered smart gesture glove that translates Indian Sign Language (ISL) into text and speech, enabling seamless communication for hearing- and speech-impaired individuals.
The project was developed by final-year students K. Arjun Shenoy, Madhusudan S., Preetham V. Amin, and Rahul Raghunatha Shettigar under the guidance of Dr. Punith Bekal, with financial support from the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST).
Powered by an ESP32 microcontroller, flex sensors, motion sensors, and a TensorFlow Lite-based machine learning model, MITRA accurately recognizes hand gestures and instantly converts them into multilingual text and speech through an Android application. Designed as a low-cost, portable, and user-friendly assistive device, the innovation aims to promote accessibility and inclusive communication while demonstrating the practical application of Artificial Intelligence in addressing real-world societal challenges.
