The Department of Basic Science, in association with the Counselling Cell of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management (SMVITM), Nitte, successfully organized an insightful session for parents during the recent Parent-Teacher Meeting. Dr. Virupaksha Devaramane, Consultant Psychiatrist at Dr. A.V. Baliga Memorial Hospital, Udupi, delivered a compelling talk titled “The Art of Supporting Adolescents through Life Challenges.”
The session, attended by over 200 parents, aimed to empower them with effective strategies to better understand and guide their adolescent children through the complexities of academic and personal life.
Dr. Devaramane emphasized the crucial balance between discipline and understanding the significant impact of peer pressure, which often manifests in behaviors such as smoking, class absenteeism, and social conformity. He strongly advised parents to maintain vigilance and offer unwavering support, fostering an environment of open communication to help adolescents make informed and healthy choices.
Addressing common adolescent struggles like anger, laziness, and feelings of inferiority, Dr. Devaramane highlighted that these behaviors often stem from underlying emotional struggles. He encouraged parents to cultivate a nurturing home environment that actively promotes self-esteem and builds resilience in their children.
The discussion also delved into identity crises and the pervasive influence of peer pressure, explaining how adolescents often engage in certain behaviors to simply “fit in.” Dr. Devaramane stressed the vital importance of assisting them in developing a positive self-identity and the confidence to resist detrimental influences. Furthermore, he shed light on serious issues such as bullying, social anxiety, and the critical risk of suicide, urging parents to be acutely attentive to behavioral changes and to not hesitate in seeking professional help when necessary.
Dr. Devaramane’s session proved to be an invaluable resource, offering practical advice and fostering a deeper understanding of the adolescent experience. His insights are designed to bridge the gap between parents and their children, promoting a supportive environment conducive to healthy development and overall well-being.
During the program, Dr. Thirumaleshwara Bhat, Principal of SMVITM, also shared his insights on the importance of conducting Parent-Teacher Meetings in the college. The program also included the felicitation of the first-semester toppers, recognizing their academic excellence.
