Two-Day Workshop on “CFD and its Applications”

Department of Mechanical Engineering at SMVITM and the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal have jointly organized Two-Day Workshop on “CFD and its Applications” association with ISTE student chapter and Institution’s Innovation Council for the benefit of 2^nd and 3^rd year students of Mechanical Engineering on 06, and 07 March 2025. Dr. Madhwesh N and Dr. Dolfred Vijay Fernandes Associate Professors in the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal were the resource person of the program. Dr. Arunachala U. Chandavar, Professor & Head, Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, MIT, Manipal has addressed the students and briefed the importance of CFD and its applications in the industries.

The following were covered in the theoretical sessions of the workshop:

• Basics of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
• Various terminologies used in CFD
• Steps involved in solving fluid flow problems using theoretical concepts and by using CFD software packages
• Basic governing equations of finite volume method and finite difference methods
• Basics of nozzles and flow through nozzles

In the hands-on sessions, the following exercises were conducted:

• Design a venturimeter and analysis of flow through venturimeter using ANSYS Fluent
• Analysis of flow through pipes under varying temperature conditions using ANSYS Fluent
• Simulations of flow through nozzles and analyzing the pressure, velocity and temperature of the fluid flowing through various types of nozzles.

Dr. Bharath K Bhat from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, SMVITM, Bantakal was the coordinator of the program. Mr. Ananth Mohan Mallya and Dr. Manjunatha S have accompanied the students.
