The Department of Physics, in association with the Student Chapter of the Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE) at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology & Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, organized an insightful invited talk on 28th February 2025 to commemorate National Science Day. The distinguished speaker for the event was Dr. Gurumurthy S.C., Associate Professor, Department of Physics, MIT Manipal. In his engaging talk, he highlighted the vast scope of science and technology in shaping the future and driving progress for the betterment of the modern world. He captivated the audience with a fascinating narrative on the evolution of microscopy, from light microscopes to electron microscopes, by presenting an intriguing puzzle. Using electron microscopy, he showcased stunning images of horsehair and a butterfly wing, offering students a closer look at the unseen wonders of nature. Dr. Gurumurthy inspired students to seize opportunities and break barriers in their pursuit of innovation. Citing the remarkable example of Dr. C.V. Raman, he emphasized
how the discovery of light scattering was achieved without the aid of advanced technology, encouraging students to embrace curiosity and perseverance in scientific exploration. On this special occasion, the Department of Physics recognized the outstanding academic achievement of Ms. Deepa D. Prabhu in Engineering Physics, awarding her the prestigious Sir C.V. Raman Award for scoring a perfect centum in the end-semester examination. The award was presented by the esteemed speaker, Dr. Gurumurthy S.C. The event was skilfully compered by Shravya Tantry, a second-year ECE student. The session witnessed the enthusiastic participation of 106 students, faculty, and staff members, making the celebration a resounding success.
The Department of Physics was established in the year 2010 and since its inception maintains a best creditable academic record in teaching and research. The Department currently has four dedicated teaching faculty. With its state of the art laboratories – including a research lab – and well-qualified faculty members, the Department of Physics strengthens the fundamentals of Engineering Physics in the first year students. The department has also been recognized as a research center by the VTU. Currently the department has one faculty member with Ph.D and two more are pursuing Ph.D. The department takes up quality research projects funded by various government agencies. At present, four part time research scholars are pursuing their doctoral research with the department. A research project worth around Rs. 15 lakhs funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) – Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), Government of India has been completed. Another project worth Rs. 4 lakh has been sanctioned by the Vision Group of Science & Technology (VGST), Government of Karnataka under the Seed Money for Young Scientist for Research (SMYSR) scheme.
