The National Service Scheme and Youth Red Cross (NSS-YRC) Unit of SMVITM organized an orientation program on National Service Scheme for NSS student volunteers of SMVITM at the institute on Saturday, 12 September 2015 Mr. A. Pundarikaksha Kodancha, Lecturer in English, SVHPU College, Innanje was the resource person.
During the program, Mr. Kodancha briefed about the history of NSS, the importance of being a volunteer of NSS, the code of conduct for NSS volunteers etc. He said that the objectives of NSS included creating social conscience in students and providing them with opportunities for serving society. The other major objectives, according to him, were: working with and among people; engaging in creative and constructive social action; enhancing one’s understanding of oneself and the community; gaining skills in the exercise of democratic leadership; promoting the will to serve the weaker sections of community and promoting national integration.
He pointed out that an NSS volunteer was expected to put in at least 120 hours of social service in an academic year and he/she would be entitled to get a certificate for the services rendered. He also briefed about all the activities that could be taken up by NSS such as educational programs; programs for work during emergencies; environmental enrichment and conservation; health, family welfare and nutrition programs and social service programs.
Ms. Anusha V. Pai welcomed the gathering and Ms. Deeksha D introduced the guest. Ms. Suchetha Shenoy proposed a vote of thanks. Mr. Nagaraja Rao, NSS Program Officer, SMVITM; Mr. Krishnakumar and Ms. Reshma Hebbar, NSS Departmental coordinators were present.
