The Youth Red Cross (YRC) of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal celebrated the “World blood Donor Day-2021” on 14th June 2021 which was held virtually called “stay tuned stay safe”. Dr. Sharath Kumar Rao J, senior consultant and HOD Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion medicine, a regional Blood Transfusion centre at Wenlock District Hospital, Mangalore, was the resource person of this session. Dr. Sharath Kumar gave information about Blood donation and also quoted that “THE LIFE OF THE FLESH IS IN THE BLOOD”. He mentioned that the minimum age for donating blood is from 18-65 years and people weighing below 45kg are not supposed to donate blood. Men can donate blood 150 times in a his lifetime whereas women can donate blood thrice in a year which means once in a 4month. Speaker also gave a brief idea about a different type of Antigens and Antibodies present in blood cells and gave a piece of information about different types of blood leaving a common A, B, O blood group. He also mentioned different types of transfusion like Plasma transfer; Platelets Transfer, Stem Cell transfer and he said that these are also some of the important transfusions. He had answered some of the queries with respect to blood donation and blood transfusion methods and answered some of the queries with respect to vaccination like why should a person shouldn’t donate blood after his vaccination and he also said why the plasma transfusion was done for the covid positive patient by taking plasma from the recovered covid patient. The session was very interactive gained a piece of knowledge about blood donation and blood transfusion.
