Providing Value-added, Holistic Engineering Education:
SHRI MADHWA VADIRAJA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & MANAGEMENT, BANTAKAL, UDUPI
Legacy of the Sode Group of Educational Institutions
Shri Sode Vadiraja Mutt, one of the highly esteemed Ashta Mutts of Udupi, has been a visionary force in the field of education since pre-independence India. The Mutt’s spiritual leaders have always upheld the belief that modern, value-based education must be made accessible to every segment of society—transcending a barrier of caste, creed, and community.
In a bold and unprecedented move for its time, His Holiness, Shri Shri Vishwendra Theertha Swamiji established a residential school (Sanivasa Shale) in 1943 at Innanje, a remote village near Shankarpura, Udupi. Creating a residential educational facility in such a rural setting during the 1940s was practically unheard of and exemplified the Swamiji's remarkable foresight and commitment to societal upliftment through education.
This pioneering step laid the foundation for what would grow into a broader educational ecosystem under the Shri Vishnumoorthy Hayavadana Swamy Society, which went on to establish both Kannada and English medium schools at Innanje, Udupi.
His successor, His Holiness Vishwothama Theertha Swamiji, continued this noble mission by strengthening the educational initiatives in Innanje, including the establishment of a Pre-University College in 1982, and expanding the reach of the society’s institutions.
In 2009, the current pontiff, His Holiness, Shri Shri Vishwavallabha Theertha Swamiji, took the movement further by creating the Shri Sode Vadiraja Mutt Education Trust (SSVMET). Recognizing the urgent need for affordable technical and professional education in the region, he established the Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM) in 2010 at Vishwothama Nagar, Bantakal.
What began with 60 students and four engineering branches in 2010, has grown into a well-established institute offering 5 undergraduate engineering programs (480 student intake) and the recently established MBA program. Over ₹3 crore in scholarships are disbursed every year to meritorious and economically disadvantaged students, affirming the Trust’s commitment to inclusive education.
To address the growing regional demand in healthcare education, the Mutt, under the aegis of Shri Vishnumoorthy Hayavadana Education Society, Udupi recently established the Niraamaya College of Nursing and the Niraamaya College of Allied Health Sciences with Medical Lab Technology, Medical Imaging Technology and Operation Theatre Technology streams on the same campus.
Continuing its mission to enhance school-level education, in 2017, the mutt took over the reins of administration of the Kadiyali Kannada & English Medium Schools in Udupi, further expanding its reach and reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality education from early childhood through higher education.
