Prof. Dr. Radhakrishna S. Aithal, an eminent faculty and administrator, is serving at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal, Udupi, a unit of Shri Sode Vadiraja Mutt Education Trust, as Director since 03 July 2015. He has taken several initiatives towards multi-dimensional growth and better visibility of SMVITM, Bantakal in the recent past, as its Principal. Dr. Aithal, a Senior Professor in Electrical & Electronics Engineering has served at renowned Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal for nearly 25 years in various capacities; as a Teacher, Head of the Department, Associate Director, Joint Director and Director In-charge, prior to this assignment.
He is the recipient of Two National Awards, “Bharat Vidya Shiromani Award” and “Certificate of Education Excellence” from International Institute of Education & Management (IIEM), New Delhi and “Rashtriya Vidya Gaurav Gold Medal Award” from Indian Solidarity Council, New Delhi in May 2015, recognizing his outstanding achievements and remarkable role in the field of higher education. Considering his extensive research works and accomplishments, he was invited as a Guest Speaker to deliver Key-note address at the ‘Minamata International Symposium on Energy & Environment’, Kumamoto University, Japan during December 2013. He was instrumental in bringing Bharat Ratna, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam to young, promising campus of SMVITM, Bantakal for Student and Faculty Interaction on 02 April 2014.
Dr. Aithal had his initial education at Mangalore. He obtained his B.E. Degree in Electrical Engg. from B.V.B. College of Engg. & Tech., Hubli, Karnataka University, in the year 1984, First Rank in M.Tech. (Lighting Science & Engg.) from Mangalore University in 1994 and Ph. D.(Engg.) Degree from Jadavpur University, Kolkata in the year 2001. He had served at S. N. Mudbidri Polytechnic, Moodabidri for one year, The Mysore Kirloskar Ltd., Harihar for one year and N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, Nitte for two years prior to joining M.I.T., Manipal.
Having a total teaching experience of 30 years at U.G.& P.G. level, he has published 49 research papers in National and International Journals and Conferences. He has been awarded with SERC Fellowship for his research project from Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India in the year 1999-2000 and Best Paper award for one of his published papers in the I.E.(I) Journal . He has guided 6 research scholars in their Ph. D. Studies and has evaluated 5 Ph.D. Theses of other universities. He has executed 3 externally funded projects including the “Light for Life” Rural Community Development Charity Project. He is a member of Expert Committee in Electrical Engg., UGC, New Delhi, the member of Expert Committee for evaluation of autonomous engineering colleges, VTU, Karnataka and the member of Expert Committee in Electrical Engg, Madhya Pradesh Govt. He has successfully guided 2 prestigious, national award winning student projects at GE Edison Innovation Challenge and Schneider Electric Innovation Challenge in 2008.
He is honored as The Life Fellow of The Institution of Engineers (India), The Optical Society of India and Indian Society of Lighting Engineers. He is a life member of Indian Society for Technical Education and Systems Society of India. He was also a member of Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, Indo-German Energy Efficiency & Environment Project and Sectional Committee ET 23 & ET 24 of Bureau of Indian Standards. Besides, he is a member of IEEE, USA and Chartered Engineer of IE, India.
