What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. Put simply, civil engineers build bridges, roads, canals, dams, tall buildings, and other large structures.

Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live. It provides the facilities for day-to-day life and for transport and industry to go about its work.

Like the Romans, Egyptians and Mayans who built great civilisations before us, our civilisation relies more than ever on teams of inventive people to design, build and maintain the sophisticated environment that surrounds us.

Infrastructure is the thing that supports our daily life which includes roads and harbours, railways and airports, hospitals, sports stadiums and schools, access to drinking water and shelter from the weather. Infrastructure adds to our quality of life, and because it works, we take it for granted. Only when parts of it fail, or are taken away, do we realise its value.

What do Civil Engineers Do?

Civil engineering was originally defined simply to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering but it actually represents so much more. Much of the physical infrastructure of our modern society is provided by Civil Engineers. Civil Engineers are concerned with all types of structures including dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers and buildings. They are responsible for the design and construction of all our transport systems, the design and management of our gas and water supply, sewerage systems, harbours, airports and railways. Civil Engineers plan, design and test the structures of private and public buildings and facilities.

Without civil engineers we wouldn’t have a constant supply of clean water, or sustainable energy to help us save our planet. Without civil engineers the world we live in would be completely unrecognizable.

They are also involved in many environmental areas such as the assessment of the impact of large scale projects have on the environment and the collection and treatment of sewage and industrial wastes, pollution control, environmental control and resource protection and management.

Career Prospects

The openings for Civil Engineers are plenty in the Government Departments, Private Consultants and Private Construction Companies in India and abroad. The scope for starting their own Enterprise like Private Consultants and Contractors are very promising for young dreaming Civil Engineers to build the nation.

A Civil Engineer will work from an architect’s drawings and consider whether the chosen materials for a particular building will be strong enough to hold a structure of that height or design. At the same time they would also think about how the structure might affect its surroundings. It is the responsibility of the civil engineer to produce safe, economical and environmentally-sound structures. Civil engineers may opt to specialise and work as construction engineers, geotechnical engineers, surveyors, structural engineers, transport engineers, water supply & distribution engineers or environmental engineers. Civil Engineers may also opt a career in occupational health, safety and environment (OHSE) and help to contain the risk of accidents during the progress of the works.

The Civil Engineering Department has been in existence since the inception of the Institute during the academic year 2010-11 with an intake approval of 60 students. The Department has got a highly qualified team of faculty members having rich experience within the academia and industry. The Department is committed to provide quality education and produce competent engineers to meet the growing demand for professionals in civil engineering.

The Department has set up state-of-the art laboratories that are on a par with Institutions of repute in different fields of civil engineering. The Department is also offering Consultancy & Testing Services to various government departments and contractors. With the existing facilities, the Department intends to develop itself as a promising consultancy & testing centre in the region and cater to the demands of society.

The Department has always remained in the forefront of innovation and development owing to its R&D initiatives, planning, design, construction and consultancy services. The Department boasts well equipped laboratories with all modern equipment in the specialized areas to meet the needs of students as well as R&D and consultancy works. Testing facilities related to civil engineering are also provided in the laboratories to fulfill the need of industries. The faculty of  the Department has expertise in testing & consultancy services in the areas of civil engineering material testing, soil investigation, tests on cement, concrete and highway materials, non-destructive testing of concrete structures, water quality analysis, surveying works, analysis, design and drawing of civil engineering sub structures and super structures, estimation, costing and valuation of proposed and existing structures and third party inspection of civil engineering structures.

The Department invites eminent personalities and academicians from prestigious Institutions and industries to deliver quality lectures to the students frequently and has organized many highly useful workshops which are   beneficial to the faculty, students and practicing engineers. The faculty members attend various workshops/conferences/training programmes on a regular basis, which would keep them abreast with the latest happenings and developments occurring in their related fields and upgrade their competencies and skill-sets up to date.
